Immediate Action needed to stop Bovine TB

Immediate Action needed to stop Bovine TB

Call for Managed Badger Cull

Mark Formosa, Conservative Spokesman for Taunton has called for a managed cull of badgers as part of immediate action to stop the spread of Bovine TB to help protect the livelihoods of local farmers.

Mark visited the working farm of Taunton Deane Councillor and farmer Norman Cavill, in West Monkton, in the wake of a Government report which proves that the movement of untested cattle is not to blame for the spread of the disease.

Afterwards, Mark said: “The time has now come for the Government to provide an ultimate solution to the problem of Bovine TB.

The Government should stop procrastinating and authorise a managed cull of diseased badgers.

I fully support those who do not want to see the wholesale slaughter of badgers - we are talking only about a licensed cull within infection hotspots, one leg of the Krebs trials.

A badger cull will be unpopular, but this is not about chasing votes, it is about what is the right thing to do to protect local livelihoods and to stop the spread of infection in the national herd, as well as our wildlife.

Immediate action is now needed.”

Norman Cavill said: “The Government must decide whether they want us to farm cattle or they want us to farm badgers instead.

I know of many farming livelihoods in Taunton Deane that are at risk, and the Government must act now in order to protect both people like ourselves and animal pedigrees which go back many generations.”
